Nov. 5, 2013. For the fourth time in seven career starts, Appalachian State University running back Marcus Cox (Dacula, Ga./Dacula) was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday. Cox’s latest honor comes on the strength of his 158 rushing yards and a career-high three rushing touchdowns in Saturday’s 35-28 loss to first-place Chattanooga.
Saturday’s 158 rushing yards were just one short of another career high for Cox, who has rushed for at least 100 yards in three-straight games and four of his seven career starts. He scored on touchdown runs of four, one and one yards to help stake Appalachian State to a 21-14 lead after three quarters.
The performance against UTC moved Cox into a tie atop the SoCon with 857 rushing yards this season and alone atop the conference with 14 total touchdowns (nine rushing, five receiving). He needs just 143 yards over the final three games of the season to become only the third freshman in school history to rush for 1,000 yards, joining SoCon Freshmen of the Year Armanti Edwards (1,153 yards in 2006) and Chip Hooks (1,062 yards in 1991).
Edwards and Hooks are also the only other Mountaineers to ever be named SoCon Freshman of the Week as many as four times. Edwards was a five-time honoree in ‘06 while Hooks earned the recognition four times in ‘91.
Cox, a Dacula, Ga. native, returns to his home state on Saturday when Appalachian State visits Georgia. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga.
