Dec. 5, 2012. SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State University men’s basketball player Jay Canty has been named as the Southern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Canty, who averaged 22.0 points, five rebounds and six assists per game last week, received the honor for the first time in his career and is the first Mountaineer since Andre Williamson (Jan. 3, 2012) to win the award.

The redshirt-sophomore notched his first career double-double with 15 points and 10 assists against Duquesne on Wednesday before pouring in 29 points at No. 16/15 Missouri on Saturday.

His 10 assists against Duquesne were the most for a Mountaineer since D.J. Thompson dished out 11 against College of Charleston in 2007 and the 29 points against Missouri were the most for an Appalachian player since Donald Sims poured in 32 against CofC in 2011.

For the week, Canty shot 51.0 percent from the floor and connected on 89.0 percent of his shots from the charity stripe. He ranks second in the SoCon in scoring (18.1 ppg) and 10th in rebounding (6.3 rpg) while ranking eighth in free-throw percentage (.810) and ninth in assists (3.3 apg).

Canty and the Mountaineers open Southern Conference play at Western Carolina on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. from WCU’s Ramsey Center.
