Caldwell-Native Madison ‘Mad Bum’ Bumgarner Starts Game 1 in Tonight’s World Series Between Giants, Royals

By Jesse Wood

Oct. 21, 2014. Caldwell-native Madison Bumgarner, who was born in Hickory in 1989, is the starting pitcher for San Francisco Giants in tonight’s Game 1 of the World Series against the Kansas City Royals. The game starts at 8:05 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

Nicknamed “Mad Bum,” he was the tenth overall pick in the first round of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft. He attended South Caldwell High School in Hudson and committed to University of North Carolina to play college ball. Yet, he elected to go pro and has since become one of the top aces in all of baseball.

According to ESPN, Bumgarner “hasn’t allowed a run in 15 innings over his first two career World Series starts.”

If Bumarner can put together a similar showing on Tuesday night, he’ll join Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson has the only pitcher in the history of Major League Baseball to not allow a run in his first three World Series starts.
