Dec. 23, 2013. Armanti Edwards is now a free agent after the Cleveland Browns waived the former Appalachian State star last week off of injured reserve, according to Akron Beacon Journal.
The Browns signed Edwards on Oct. 29 following his release from the Charlotte Panthers, where he was actually named preseason MVP by head coach Ron Rivera before being cut. The Panthers have since won 10 of its last 11 games.
Edwards played in two games with the Browns before being placed on injured reserve in November for an ankle injury. Edwards caught one reception for 10 yards and averaged seven yards on four punt returns with the Browns.
Edwards, drafted in the third round, spent three prior years with the Panthers, where he played in 39 games, caught five passes for 121 yards and returned 36 punts for 253 yards, averaging seven yards per punt. He also averaged 19.7 yards per kick on 15 kickoffs.
As Matt Florjancic reported for ClevelandBrowns.com in a piece titled, “Edwards already Ohio football legend,” Edwards never “caught on” to receiver and special teams after playing his entire college career as a quarterback.
“It was very difficult,” Edwards said. “I played quarterback all my life, and to come and play with the best players in the world and change your position, it was tough.”
While his professional career has been lackluster, Edwards had one of the most distinguished careers in college football, becoming the first player in NCAA Division 1 history to throw for more than 10,000 yards and rush for more than 4,000 yards.
In his four years at Appalachian State, Edwards compiled a 42-7 record as a starter and led the team to two national championships – including perhaps the biggest upset in college football history, the 34-32 victory over No. 5 Michigan in Ann Arbor on a September Saturday in 2007.
