Aug. 19, 2013. Approximately 4,500 fans braved a rain-soaked evening in the High Country to turn out for Appalachian State University football’s annual Fan Fest at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Saturday.

After Appalachian’s coaches and players signed autographs and took photos with fans on the west concourse for an hour-and-a-half, the Mountaineers hit the soggy field for their third and final intrasquad scrimmage of fall camp. As was the case in the previous two intrasquad duels, both the offense and defense had their share of highlights during the 93-play scrimmage.

Appalachian State’s defense forced four turnovers and five three-and-outs in 16 series but the offense scored four times (three touchdowns and a field goal) and racked up 486 yards, good for a lofty 5.2 yards per play.

Appalachian’s three touchdowns all came through the air. Backup quarterback Kameron Bryant (Cary, N.C./Panther Creek) threw two of the three touchdown passes, connecting on scoring strikes of 26 and 10 yards to Sean Price (Reston, Va./South Lakes) andSimms McElfresh (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Christian), respectively. Starting signal-caller Jamal Londry-Jackson (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) tossed the other touchdown pass, a 63-yarder to true freshman Marcus Cox (Dacula, Ga./Dacula), who took the short throw from Londry-Jackson and easily out-ran defenders up the right sideline to score untouched. Zach Matics (Jacksonville, N.C./Southwest-Onslow) made a 31-yard field goal to account for the only other points of the evening.

On the other side of the ball, Appalachian’s defense forced five fumbles in the wet conditions and recovered three. Junior Deuce Robinson (Blythewood, S.C./Blythewood), sophomore Thomas Bronson (Brooksville, Fla./Hernando) and true freshmen Nathaniel Norwood (Hampton, Ga./Lovejoy), Myles Kinder (Roswell, Ga./Blessed Trinity) and T.J. Watkins (Forest City, N.C./East Rutherford) all forced fumbles while Kinder, true freshman Kennan Gilchrist (Abbeville, S.C./Abbeville) and junior Nic Shriner(Hillsborough, N.C./Orange) accounted for the three recoveries. True freshman Tyrell Brown (Hampton, Ga./Lovejoy) picked off a pass that slipped through a receiver’s hands and returned the interception 55 yards.

Cox had the biggest individual night for the Mountaineers’ offense with 65 yards and a touchdown on two receptions and 40 yards on six carries (6.6 avg.). Reserve running back Eric Davidson (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford) added 104 yards on just 10 carries and sophomore wide receiver Bobo Beathard (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) caught a team-high five passes for 59 yards.

Defensively, true freshman Lee Wright (York, S.C./York Comprehensive) led Appalachian State with seven tackles. Robinson,Stephen Burns (Taylorsville, N.C./Alexander Central) and Tashion Singleton (Charlotte, N.C./West Mecklenburg) all notched sacks for the Mountaineers. As a team, Appalachian tallied eight tackles for loss.

With Saturday’s final intrasquad scrimmage in the books, Appalachian State turns its full attention to game-planning for the Aug. 31season opener at Montana on Monday.

NOTE: Due to the steady rain, the fireworks display scheduled for after Saturday night’s scrimmage was postponed to a yet-to-be-determined later date.
