Aug. 15, 2012. Appalachian State University wrestling head coach JohnMark Bentley announced the hiring of assistant coach Daren Burns on Tuesday.

After spending a year as an assistant coach at Youth Education & Sport in Greensboro, N.C., Burns served as a volunteer and then full-time assistant at his alma mater, UNC Greensboro.

“I am extremely excited to be adding Daren to our staff at ASU,” Bentley said. “He brings a tremendous amount of knowledge and passion for the sport to our program. Daren will make an immediate impact on our success moving forward.”

Burns was a four-time Southern Conference champion and NCAA qualifier at UNCG, and his 107 wins made him the all-time wins leader in school history. Most recently, Burns finished in the top-six in the 2012 Olympic Trials.

“My wife Caitlin and I are extremely excited to join the Appalachian State wrestling family,” Burns said. “Coach Bentley and Coach Fisk have done a tremendous job getting the program to where it is. I am very fortunate to be able to join such a young and energetic coaching staff. I am read to work with the guys to help take Appalachian wrestling to even higher levels.”

The Mountaineers finished tied for 21st at last season’s NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships and will begin their 2012-13 campaign in early November.
