Aug. 26, 2014. Beech Mountain Resort hosted its second race of the three race series on Sunday afternoon on Beech Mountain. The competition included 82 riders that ranged from the age of six to over-40. All riders were tested due to rain showers on Saturday evening that left the track looking like a mud pit.

The resort allowed children 12 and under to ride for free, which proved beneficial because 17 competitors raced in that age bracket alone.

The peak elevation at Beech Mountain Resort is 5,506 feet as the race included an 830-foot vertical drop while riders were timed from top to bottom.

The top men’s and women’s PRO honors were swept by Lees-McRae College representatives when freshmen duo Phillip Kmetz (2:23:46 and Taylor Allison (3:15.52) won their respective races.

Twelve-year-old Lucas Hatsios (Belmont) cruised to a victory in the 12-and-under beginner’s race with a time of 4:00.72 while Brantley Schnell (Denver) claimed the win in the elite race using a 3:48.94 mark.

Gravity Pirates East member Randy Arnold won the men’s 40-Plus category with a time of 2:49.49 while Owen Witcher out dueled 10 competitors in the juniors 18-and-under race with a mark of 2:44:42.

Silas Jackson (Boone) earned the “Tough Man” award for exhibiting exemplary leadership and sportsmanship while finishing fourth in the juniors 12-and-under elite competition.
