March 27, 2013. The last time ASU didn’t making the Southern Conference football playoffs was in 2004. Next year will be similar but not because of how well – or how poorly – the team may play.
Because ASU is moving to the Sun Belt Conference, ASU football won’t be eligible for the Southern Conference playoffs in the 2013 season, according to Southern Conference Assistant Director of Media Relations Phil Perry.
Although ASU hasn’t yet officially announced the move (a press conference is being held at 4 p.m.), the Southern Conference Commissioner John Iamarino released a statement earlier today acknowledged the departure of both ASU and Georgia Southern.
The move is to take place in summer 2014, and, according to Perry, both teams are required to pay an exit fee of $600,000 each.
Interesting to note how some of the other sports within ASU handle the move. Take men’s soccer, for example. As of right now, the Sun Belt Conference doesn’t have a men’s soccer program.
This and more will be reported after the 4 p.m. press conference on the campus of ASU today.
