Barbecue Fundraiser For Nicaraguan Village Takes Place Before WHS Football Game At Groce Stadium Friday

By Mark S. Kenna

Oct. 11, 2013. Before the Watauga High School Pioneers take on the Freedom High School Patriots, there will be a barbecue fundraiser to help a village in Nicaragua. All ages are encouraged to come by and enjoy some barbecue.

The fundraiser will start at 4 p.m. and ends at kickoff.

All the proceeds from the fundraiser will go to benefit the five-acre village in Chichigalpa, Nicaragua, and three other non-denominational Christian ministries in the area, Jim Bob Norman, New Song vice president said.

Besides being a ministry for the people of Chichigalpa, New Song also helps to provide schooling for children, medical services, clean water, and other forms of assistance.

Barbecue will be served in two sizes, and participants will be able to purchase a sandwich for $4 and a plate for $8. Barbecue plates will include smoked boston butt, baked beans, coleslaw, tea and a bun.  There will also be hotdogs for those who do not like barbecue. Soft drinks will also be for sale along with Nicaraguan coffee and assorted baked goods from the community.

During the event there will be a $5 per head corn hole tournament that will be held on the Pioneer’s baseball field.

Come Back Shack presents the 50-f00t corn hole toss throughout the event.  If a participant makes a three-point toss whereby the beanbag goes in the hole, then Come Back Shack will reward them with a free combo meal. It will be $1 for each toss.

There will also be arts and crafts made by the people of Chichigalpa for sale. All the proceeds from the arts and crafts will go to the specific artist.

A raffle is scheduled to go on throughout the event.  Prizes include gift cards to local businesses like Mellow Mushroom, Red Onion, Peddler Steakhouse, The Trolley Stop, Los Arcos, Boone Drug, Town Tavern, The Rock Bar and Grill, Dan’l Boone Inn and more.  There will also be a voucher for a High Country Christmas tree from a local grower.

“We encourage everyone to come out and enjoy a nice fall afternoon that will last longer and mean more for the people of Chichigalpa,” Norman said. “More than three hours of fun, food and fellowship will give more to this community, and that’s the biggest blessing we can ask for.”
