Nov. 19, 2012. At a house party on Sunday morning, two college football players, including an ASU defensive lineman who was shot, and another person were injured during an middle-of-the-night altercation in northwest Charlotte.

The ASU football player was 6’3, 245-pound freshman Tashion Singleton, who is from Charlotte and according to a statement by head coach Jerry Moore was not seriously injured. Singleton was a honor-roll student at West Mecklenburg High and received the team’s leadership award, according to his player profile at www.goasu.com.

It’s not clear, however, if those injured were involved in the altercation or were just innocent bystanders hit by stray bullets.

The Charlotte Observer reported that police officers responded to shots fired and arrived on the scene around 2:30 a.m., which by that time the people involved had scattered the scene and officers found no evidence that gunshots were fired.

“A short time later, investigators discovered a shooting victim inside a nearby vehicle. That person was taken to Carolinas Medical Center. Two more victims showed up at Presbyterian hospital a short time later,” reported the Charlotte Observer.

Prince Mayela

The other college football player has been identified as UNC Charlotte free safety Prince Mayela, a freshman, who was shot in the hip and is not believed to in a life-threatening condition. Both Mayela and Singleton were teammates at West Mecklenburg High.

“I visited with Tashion this afternoon and he is resting comfortably and in good spirits,” said Moore in a statement. “We are thankful that his injury is not more serious. The thoughts of our players and coaches are with Tashion and his family as he begins what we pray will be a speedy and complete recovery.”

Police haven’t released the third victim, and so far no one has been arrested for the shootings. Police are seeking assistance through Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
