Sept. 3, 2013. On the strength of a game-high-tying 12 tackles in last Saturday’s season opener at Montana, Appalachian State University inside linebacker John Law (Atlanta, Ga./Grady) was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Week, the SoCon office announced on Monday.

Law’s 12 tackles included a sack and a tackle for loss. He also made perhaps the defensive play of the game when he stuffed Montana running back Jordan Canada for no gain on fourth-and-one from the App State 19 yard line to thwart a scoring threat on the Grizzlies’ opening possession.

Law is only the second defensive player from Appalachian State to be named SoCon Freshman of the Week since 2004 (joining current Mountaineer defensive end Ronald Blair (Greensboro, Ga./Greene County), who earned the honor in 2011).

Law and the Mountaineers open the home portion of their 2013 schedule on Saturday when they host North Carolina A&T. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
