ASU Athletics ‘Honors the Memory of Deputy Mast’ at ASU Football Home Opener on Saturday, September 8

Deputy William Mast Jr.

Sept. 5, 2012. Prior to Appalachian State University football’s home opener on Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 8, volunteers will be stationed at the KBS gates to accept donations to the William Hunter Mast Scholarship Fund.

The William Hunter Mast Scholarship Fund was established to endow college tuition costs for William Hunter Mast, the newborn son of late Watauga County Sheriff Deputy William Mast, Jr.

Deputy Mast was shot and killed while responding to a 911 call on July 26, less than three weeks before the birth of his son. Deputy Mast is the first Watauga County Sheriff’s deputy ever killed in the line of duty.

“It is a privilege to honor the memory of Deputy Mast at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Saturday,” Appalachian State director of athletics Charlie Cobb said. “We are proud of the Watauga County community’s response to the tragic death of Deputy Mast and the outpouring of support for his wife, Paige, and son, William, and hope that the Appalachian family will be generous in their support of the William Hunter Mast Scholarship Fund on Saturday.”
