Jan. 9, 2013. Appalachian State University associate athletics director and Appalachian IMG Sports Network play-by-play voice David Jackson has been named the 2012 North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year, the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association announced on Wednesday.

The honor is the second of Jackson’s career. He was also named North Carolina’s top sportscaster in 2007.

Jackson is in his 13th year as the “Voice of the Mountaineers,” calling the play-by-play action for Appalachian State football, men’s basketball and baseball broadcasts on the Appalachian IMG Sports Network. In addition to his play-by-play duties, Jackson is also the host of Appalachian Football Weekly and Mountaineer Basketball with Jason Capel (Appalachian State’s weekly football and basketball television coaches’ shows).

The Appalachian State alumnus began his career as a senior intern while an undergraduate student, filling the roles of football sideline reporter and men’s basketball color analyst and chief statistician during his time as a student intern. Jackson took over the play-by-play reins in February 2000 and followed the men’s basketball team to an NCAA Tournament appearance. Upon his graduation from Appalachian in 2000, he was named the athletics department’s full-time director of external operations and was promoted to associate athletics director for public affairs in December 2004.

In addition to being a two-time N.C. Sportscaster of the Year, Jackson has also been a member of the NSSA’s National Board of Directors since 2010, joining prominent media personalities such as Chris Berman, Marty Brennaman, Keith Jackson, Jim Nantz, Rick Reilly, Bob Ryan and George Vecsey on the prestigious panel.

“This is another well-deserved honor for David,” Appalachian State director of athletics Charlie Cobb said. “The entire Appalachian State family benefits from David’s talent and hard work, both on the air and behind the scenes.”

Jackson, 35, will receive the award during the 54th-Annual NSSA Awards Weekend, June 8-10 in Salisbury, N.C.
