Appalachian State University Women’s Hoops Fall to Sun Belt Opponent Georgia State 76-71; Photos Included

Jan. 19, 2015. Appalachian State University women’s basketball fell to Sun Belt opponent Georgia State on Saturday afternoon with a score of 76-71.

The Mountaineers (8-7, 3-3 Sun Belt) stayed close to the Panthers (8-8, 3-4) throughout the game, but could not catch up in the end, losing their third conference game.

Georgia State took a 12-8 lead to start the game with the Panthers’ Alisha Andrews hitting two three-pointers. The Panthers continued to be accurate from behind the arc, stretching their lead to ten with a score of 20-10 at the 12:35 minute mark.

The Mountaineers would go on a 10-4 run over the next four minutes to trail by just four points with 8:11 to play in the first. A jumper from Ashley Bassett-Smith and a layup from Maryah Sydnor helped the Apps tie the game, 28-28 at the 5:12 minute mark.

The game would remain close for the rest of the half as the Apps trailed 38-36 at halftime.

Sydnor led the Mountaineers in the first half with ten points, while the team recorded a 40.5 field goal percentage.

Georgia State was led by Andrews’ 11 points, while the team shot 45.2 percent from the floor.

The Mountaineers came out in the second half, quickly tying up the game with two points from KeKe Cooper before finding a three-pointer from Katie Mallow to lead 41-40 with 16:08 to play.

Appalachian continued to roll, scoring six-straight points, four from Bassett-Smith alone, to take a 47-43 lead. From there the Panthers would go on an 11-1 run, pulling ahead, 54-48 with 9:34 to play.

Georgia State would score five-straight points, but Farrahn Wood hit a three for the Apps to put them within six points. With 4:29 to play the Panthers would lead, 65-57, but Cooper and Sydnor would each hit free throws to pull within four points again.

At the 1:33 minute mark Mallow sank two free throws as the Apps trailed by just three points with a score of 70-67, but the Mountaineers would be forced to foul. After sending Georgia State to the line four times, App State fell, 76-71.

Sydnor led the Apps with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Joi Jones followed with 11 points and six assists. The Mountaineers shot 36.1 percent from the floor, grabbing 42 rebounds and recording 13 turnovers.

Four players scored in double-figures for Georgia State as Brittany Logan led with 17 points and nine rebounds. The team recorded a 45.5 field goal percentage, 38 rebounds and 15 turnovers.

The Mountaineers return to action when they travel to Troy on Monday, Jan. 19 for a 5 p.m. game.
