Appalachian State University Sweeps the 2012-2013 Southern Conference Commissioner’s and Germann Cups

May 30, 2013. For the ninth time in its illustrious history, Appalachian State University has swept the 2012-13 Southern Conference Commissioner’s and Germann Cups, the SoCon office announced on Tuesday. The Commissioner’s and Germann Cups are awarded annually to the institutions fielding the SoCon’s best all-around men’s and women’s sports programs, respectively.

Appalachian State is the only school to ever win the Commissioner’s and Germann Cups in the same academic year, a feat it has now accomplished in 1986-87, 1987-88, 1988-89, 1989-90, 1991-92, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2010-11 and 2012-13.

appy-state-logoAppalachian won its eighth-straight and 33rd overall Commissioner’s Cup with 92 total points, 21 more than second-place Davidson. The Commissioner’s Cup race was a rout, as the 21-point margin between the Mountaineers and second-place Davidson was larger the difference between the Wildcats (71 pts.) and 10th place The Citadel (50.5 pts.).

Appalachian State’s convincing Commissioner’s Cup victory came on the strength of conference championships in football, cross country and indoor track and field. Half of the Mountaineers’ 10 men’s programs finished first or second in the SoCon standings.

The Mountaineers have won all 33 of their Commissioner’s Cups in the last 36 years. Appalachian has also claimed the honor 28 times in the last 30 years and 21 times in the last 22 years.

Appalachian State’s women won their 10th Germann Cup by the slimmest of margins, edging Elon by a half-point (77.5-77). Softball’s first-ever conference championship proved to be the difference in Appalachian’s victory, which was also buoyed by a league title in cross country and second-place finishes in indoor and outdoor track and field.

Appalachian State’s 10 Germann Cups are the second-most in SoCon history, behind only Furman’s 12. In addition to the nine claimed in its nine Germann/Commissioner’s Cup sweeps, Appalachian also won the Germann Cup in 1990-91.

The Mountaineers will compete for the cups for the final time in 2013-14, as Appalachian announced in March that it will join the Sun Belt Conference on July 1, 2014. The scope of the cup races will change dramatically in the near future, as three of the top four Commissioner’s Cup competitors and the three highest Germann Cup finishers will depart the SoCon over the next 13 months.

Appalachian State will receive its Commissioner’s and Germann Cups as part of the SoCon’s annual Honors Dinner on Wednesday in Hilton Head, S.C.
