Feb. 6, 2015. Just 70 days after Appalachian State University football wrapped up an impressive debut season in NCAA Division I FBS and the Sun Belt Conference, the 2015 Mountaineers will hit the field for the first time when spring practice begins on Saturday.

Thanks to the Sofield Family Indoor Practice Facility, Appalachian State will be the second FBS program in the nation to begin spring practice in 2015 (in-state neighbor Duke opens spring ball on Friday). The early start date allows for the Mountaineers to fit all 15 NCAA-allowed practices in before Appalachian’s spring break, which runs from March 7-15. In turn, when the Mountaineers return from spring break, their offseason strength-and-conditioning program will begin and run uninterrupted until the end of the academic year in May.

Appalachian State has a record 94 players on the roster for spring practice this year, with only four expected to missSaturday’s spring opener due to injuries.

Due to the unpredictability of late February weather in the High Country, Appalachian State regrets to announce that there will not be a spring game this year. However, all practices that are held outdoors at Kidd Brewer Stadium will be open to the public (due to space limitations in the Sofield Facility, indoor practices will be closed). An announcement will be made each practice day at the official Twitter accounts of App State athletics (@appstate_sports) and App State football(@AppState_FB) about whether practice will be held outdoors or indoors.

Appalachian State returns 48 letterwinners and 22 starters (10 offense, 10 defense, two specialists) from last year’s 7-5 squad. The Mountaineers won the final six games of their inaugural FBS campaign, good for a 6-2 record and third-place finish in their first season in the Sun Belt. App State’s six-game winning streak is the fifth-longest in FBS going into the 2015 campaign.
