July 31, 2014. On Saturday, July 26, the Appalachian Rollergirls played a fierce bout against the Rogue Rollergirls of Fayetteville and came out on top with a final score of 154-114. The Rollergirls also played Rogue Rollergirls earlier in the season, getting edged out by just 14 points on May 10.
Currently, the Rollergirls record for the season is two wins to three losses.
“I would say that we really played well together as a team for this bout,” said Jennele Vaquera, aka Coco Janel.
“At this point in the season our strategies have become much more effective and fluid, we just mesh together perfectly now.”
The VIPs for last weekend’s bout were Coco Janel as the MVP blocker and Patricia Ybanez aka PYT as the MVP Jammer.
“The Rogue Rollergirls were gracious hosts,” Vaquera said. “They were competitive and a really fun team to play. It was probably one of our best bouts of the season as far as sportsmanship and playing as a team. They were a very challenging team to play, they are a really strong group.”
The next bout for the Appalachian Rollergirls will take place on Saturday, Aug. 9. The girls are scheduled to battle the Carolina Bootleggers at the Holmes Convocation Center at Appalachian State University. Doors for the event will open at 5 p.m.
Proceeds from the match will benefit the Blue Ridge Conservancy. Get your tickets early for just $10 from Cafe Portofino’s, Lucky Penny, Woodlands Barbecue, Piedmont Federal Savings Bank or from your favorite Rollergirl. Tickets are $12 at the door and children under 10 receive free admission.
