April 23, 2012. BOONE — If you aren’t attending Merlefest, why not attend Gerlefest?
Some of Boone’s best female athletes on wheels will be defending their perfect roller derby record, this Saturday, April 28 at 5 p.m. at the George M. Holmes Convocation Center. The Appalachian Rollergirls (ARG) will play against the B-Dazzlers of Charlotte, N.C. ARG is Boone’s first and only all female adult roller derby team.
This will not be the first time these two teams have met. Last season ARG traveled to Charlotte and brought home a hard earned victory. ARG finished last season with an impressive 8 wins and 3 losses. This season ARG is undefeated with an impressive 3-0 record.
The ARG team evolved in February of 2010 by a former ASU student Jordan Coats and a few local business women. The roller girls are in their second season and this will be their first home bout of the year. ARG will be hosting a total of three home bouts this year: April 28, June 23 and August 4, all at the George M. Holmes Center.
ARG is a non-profit organization and will be sponsoring the Watauga Humane Society for this upcoming April 28 bout. The roller girls have actively been volunteering with the Watauga Humane Society (WHS) and have an ongoing sponsorship with the local animal adoption agency.
“We’re happy to help and support local charities, like Watauga Humane Society,” says Ashley Tanner, aka Tan-her-hide, an ARG team skater. “Roller derby offers something different for people to check out and have a good time. We always try to support community organizations, while at the same time, putting on a great show for the public.”
