Appalachian State University and Marshall University have agreed to a home-and-home football series, the schools announced on Wednesday. Appalachian State hosts Marshall at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Sept. 25, 2021 and travels to face the Thundering Herd at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, W. Va. on Sept. 17, 2022.

Appalachian State and Marshall have squared off 22 times on the gridiron, with 21 of those matchups coming when the Mountaineers and Thundering Herd were both members of the Southern Conference from 1977-96. Appalachian holds a 14-8 advantage in the all-time series.

In 11 of the teams’ 13 contests from 1985-96, at least one squad was ranked in the NCAA Division I-AA top 25. Both teams were nationally ranked eight times during that 13-game stretch.

Perhaps the most memorable games in the series were played in 1994 and ‘95.

On Oct. 22, 1994, No. 24 Appalachian State upset top-ranked Marshall, 24-14, during a steady downpour at Kidd Brewer Stadium. College Football Hall-of-Famer Dexter Coakley led a dominant defensive performance with 15 tackles and current App State head coach Scott Satterfield, making only the second start of his career, threw for 113 yards and rushed for 30 yards and a touchdown to pace the offense in the Mountaineers’ first-ever win over a No. 1 team.

On Oct. 21, 1995, the teams squared off at what was then known as Marshall Stadium in Huntington and a five-yard touchdown run by Satterfield with 4:18 to go in the ballgame lifted the No. 2-ranked Mountaineers to a 10-3 triumph over the No. 3 Thundering Herd. Once again, Coakley was the game’s most dominant performer with 21 tackles, two tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries, three pass breakups and a forced fumble. Current App State defensive line coach Mark Ivey chipped in with five tackles, a tackle for loss, a sack, three QB hurries and a pass breakup.

The teams have only met once since Marshall left the Southern Conference for NCAA Division I-A (now NCAA Division I FBS) in 1997, a 50-17 win by the 19th-ranked Herd on Aug. 31, 2002  in Huntington.

Appalachian State, which is entering its second year in FBS and the Sun Belt Conference, now has four home-and-home series scheduled versus Conference USA opponents. In addition to facing Marshall in 2021 and ‘22, the Mountaineers have series set against Old Dominion (2015-16) and Charlotte (2018-19). Southern Miss also visits Kidd Brewer Stadium in 2018 to close out a series that began in Hattiesburg, Miss. last season.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT THE APPALACHIAN STATE-MARSHALL SERIES:

“We’re excited to renew our football series with Marshall. The Appalachian-Marshall rivalry still holds a special place in the hearts of Mountaineer fans. Many thanks to Marshall athletics director Mike Hamrick, associate A.D. David Steele and football coach Doc Holliday for working with us to make it happen.”

— Appalachian State director of athletics Doug Gillin

“This is a great series for our program. We have a lot of respect for Marshall and the success that they have achieved at the FBS level. I have been a part of the Appalachian-Marshall rivalry as a player and coach and am excited for our fans and student-athletes that the series has been renewed.”

— Appalachian State head coach Scott Satterfield

“It is great to get Appalachian State back onto our schedule and that we can give our fans another drivable road game. Appalachian has a wonderful tradition and is already one of the top teams in the Sun Belt Conference.”
