ASU Football Adds Two Standout JuCo Transfers, SEC Powers Alabama, Auburn, Georgia Interested in Recruit

Dec. 18, 2014. Two junior-college standouts — wide receiver Zireycus Letman and cornerback Mondo Williams — signed National Letters of Intent on Wednesday to attend and play football at Appalachian State University, head coach Scott Satterfield announced.

Both Letman and Williams will begin attending Appalachian State in January. They will join the Mountaineers for football activities immediately upon their enrollment and will participate in spring practice in 2015. Both have two seasons of eligibility remaining.

A 6-3, 195-pound wideout, Letman is rated as a three-star prospect by Rivals.com and 247Sports. He caught 35 passes for 541 yards and six touchdowns in two seasons at Georgia Military, where he was teammates with current Appalachian State receiver Montez McGuire in 2013. Ranked by 247Sports as the No. 11 junior-college receiver in the nation, Letman drew interest from a slew of power-conference programs, including Alabama, Arizona, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisville, Mississippi State, Tennessee and UCLA. He was also recruited by in-state rival Charlotte and Sun Belt Conference opponent Georgia State.

A 5-11, 175-pound cornerback, Williams is rated as a two-star prospect by Rivals.com, Scout.com and 247Sports. He intercepted eight passes, broke up nine more and had 44 tackles in 2014, en route to being named a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) second-team all-American. Williams returned one of his eight interceptions for a touchdown and helped lead Iowa Western to an 11-0 regular-season record and a berth in the NJCAA national championship game. He chose Appalachian State over Georgia State, Idaho, New Mexico, Ohio and Toledo.

“Zireycus and Mondo are both experienced players that will step right in and compete for big roles on our team in 2015,”  Satterfield said. “Zireycus is a physical receiver that will give us a big target in the passing game and joins a long list of Georgia Military alums that have become great student-athletes here at Appalachian State. Mondo fills an immediate need for us at cornerback and will compete for the starting role left behind by the graduation of all-Sun Belt corner Joel Ross. We’re excited that they’ll be here next month to get a jump on things in the classroom, in the weight room and on the field.”

With the addition of Letman and Williams, Appalachian State football has four newcomers slated to join the program for the spring semester. Tight end Collin Reed and place kicker Michael Rubino, both early high-school graduates, are also expected to enroll at Appalachian in January.

The newcomers join an Appalachian State squad that returns 20 starters in 2015. In their first season as a member of the NCAA Division I FBS Sun Belt Conference, the Mountaineers won their final six games to finish 7-5 in 2014. Appalachian is slated to open spring practice on Friday, Feb. 6.
