Appalachian State University football announced on Friday morning that it has added three home games to its future schedules. The Mountaineers will host Gardner-Webb on Sept. 22, 2018 and East Tennessee State on Aug. 31, 2019 and Aug. 31, 2024. All three games will be played at Appalachian State’s Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Appalachian State has a nearly century-old history with both NCAA Division I FCS opponents.
The Mountaineers’ series with Gardner-Webb dates back to 1929 and App State leads the all-time series, 7-0. In their most recent matchup, the Mountaineers beat the Runnin’ Bulldogs, 45-7, on Oct. 6, 2007 at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Appalachian State and East Tennessee State have squared off 46 times on the gridiron, dating all the way back to the Mountaineers’ first year of football in 1928. Separated by just 55 miles, the schools were conference-mates in the Smoky Mountain Conference from 1935-37 and in the Southern Conference from 1979 until ETSU disbanded its football program after the 2003 season.
ETSU reinstated football in 2015 and is once again a member of the SoCon. Besides current conference rival Georgia Southern, the Buccaneers will be the first former SoCon foe that Appalachian State has played since the Mountaineers joined the NCAA Division I FBS Sun Belt Conference in 2014. App State leads the all-time series versus ETSU, 31-14-1, including a 16-6 advantage in games played in Boone.
The addition of Gardner-Webb fills out Appalachian State’s 2018 non-conference schedule. The Mountaineers open the ‘18 slate at Penn State (Sept. 1) and Charlotte (Sept. 8) before returning home to play Southern Miss (Sept. 15) and GWU (Sept. 22).
The season opener versus ETSU will give App State back-to-back home games to start the 2019 campaign with a home matchup versus Charlotte set for Sept. 7. The second contest versus ETSU is the first that Appalachian has scheduled for 2024.
