May 29, 2012. On Wednesday, May 30, the Appalachian State baseball team will have a public sendoff at Smith Stadium from 12:45 to 1 p.m. as they board the bus to head to Charlottesville, Va. to begin their NCAA Tournament play.

The Mountaineers (39-16) will be playing in their first postseason game in 26 years on Friday at the University of Virginia’s Davenport Field.

“[The sendoff is being held to] give fans the opportunity to wish them well as they are leaving,” said Mike Flynn, ASU assistant athletics director.

The Mountaineers have had an impressive season to this point, winning two of three games against No. 7 ranked Louisiana State University, defeating Duke twice and almost defeating No. 3 ranked South Carolina.

“It’s been great for the university, for our sports program, for our baseball program and for our athletics department,” said Flynn. “The national exposure they have created has been nothing but positive for the university and athletics department.”

In order to make it to the final eight teams that make up the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. the Mountaineers must win their regional bracket, then win a super regional bracket.

The Mountaineers are the No. 3 ranked team in the four-team Charlottesville, Va. regional. Their first opponent of the postseason is the No. 2 ranked Oklahoma Sooners.

The game begins at 8 p.m. on Friday. According to Flynn, the Mountaineer players are confident in their chances.

“They’ve never gotten on a bus expecting to lose,” Flynn said.
