April 18, 2013. Two hours after ASU Chancellor Kenneth Peacock announced that he was stepping down from his post as soon as a successor is found, Athletics Director Charlie Cobb released a statement, saying the announcement “came as a big shock to the entire campus.”
“Dr. Ken Peacock’s announcement that he is stepping down as Appalachian State University’s chancellor came as a big shock to the entire campus,” Cobb said. “No one embodies the Appalachian Spirit better than Chancellor Peacock. He is committed to Appalachian being its best in all endeavors. His leadership will be missed but, thankfully, that will not be immediately.”
Just a few weeks ago, Cobb and Peacock were on the podium together during the announcement of ASU Football’s move into FBS and the majority of the athletics programs entering the Sun Belt Conference next year.
During that press conference, Peacock was enthusiastic and said he saw no downside with the move.
Peacock said, “The future is so bright, sometimes we have to wear shades.”
