July 6, 2012. The American Alpine Club (AAC) recently announced that Lisa Hummel, a resident of Watauga County, will become its new Southeast Regional Coordinator later this summer.

This announcement marks “another important milestone” in the AAC’s strategic five-year plan, according to a press release. (See YouTube video below.)

Based in Golden, Co., the AAC is a nonprofit that provides knowledge and inspiration, conservation and advocacy and logistical support for the climbing community. Among other things, the AAC advocates for American climbers domestically and around the world and provides $80,000 of grants annual as well as volunteer opportunities to protect and conserve the climbing areas.

The Southeast Region of the AAC, which features a vast variety of rock from sandstone boulders in Alabama to 1,000-foot granite cliffs in North Carolina, encompasses Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, West Virginia and Virginia.

Hummel graduated from ASU in 2005 with a degree in cultural anthropology.

“The Southeast is at the core of my extended climbing community. While there are very diverse sub-cultures and sub-regions within the Southeast, I believe we all have similar goals and values at heart,” Hummel said in an email. “My roots have grown deep and wide here in the southeast, and I am very excited to get out as the Club’s Regional Coordinator. I am looking forward to connecting with local members, volunteers, and climbing organizations to establish some great local gatherings, and many meaningful projects and goals.”
