Jan. 16, 2015. With the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend being the last major holiday that impacts the skiing and snowboarding industry each winter season, the ski resorts are hoping the next few days of business are excellent.

Between Beech Mountain Resort, Sugar Mountain Resort and Appalachian Ski Mtn., 42 of the 48 slopes at these resorts are open. In the past couple of nights, the resorts have been able to make snow, and resort operators are saying that conditions are ideal and should hold up well throughout the weekend.

“Temps look seasonal and weather forecast is prime for the weekend,” said Appalachian Ski Mtn. Marketing Director Drew Stanley on Friday afternoon.

Appalachian Ski Mtn. has 12 of its trails open this holiday weekend.

Beech Mountain Resort has 14 of 15 trails open. Talia Freeman of Beech Mountain Resort said, “The conditions are great. We had some natural snow combined with cold temperatures, so the skiing couldn’t be better.”

Sugar Mountain Resort has 16 of its 21 slopes open, including all of the main trails. Sugar Mountain Resort features a 36 to 85 inch base, packed-powder surface. In addition to those open slopes, Kim Jochl of Sugar Mountain Resort said that tubing, ice skating and snowshoeing are other winter-fun options at the resort.

And don’t forget about snow tubing at Hawksnest in Seven Devils, where 28 lanes will be open on this holiday weekend. Because Hawksnest expects this week to be busy, the tubing resort is asking that folks buy tickets online to ensure that you will be able to have some tubing at Hawksnest.
