June 21, 2012. Appalachian State University student-athletes received more academic accolades on Thursday when 28 Mountaineers were named to the Southern Conference Spring Academic all-conference team.
The list included those who participated in baseball, golf, softball, tennis and outdoor track & field during the 2012 season. In order to qualify for the list, student-athletes are required to carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or better while competing in 50 percent of their team’s competitions during the year or be a regular contributor as a pitcher in baseball or softball.
Appalachian’s women’s outdoor track & field squad led the way with 11 of its members named to the academic all-SoCon team while softball had six players earn the honor. David Port (baseball) was one of nine student-athletes in the entire conference to earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the semester.
ASU finishes the 2011-12 academic year with a total of 76 student-athletes named to the SoCon’s Academic all-conference teams for the Fall, Winter and Spring semesters.
