Looking for something fun, new and family-friendly to do this weekend? Head over to Newland on Saturday night for the High Country’s first NAWA pro-wrestling event!

Wrestling events have become a local favorite in the area, and the Avery County Parks and Recreation department brings this new Morganton-based wrestling program for friends and neighbors to enjoy.

Parks and Rec employee Teddy Bare said attendants can expect “a good, clean show” with no foul language and no blood.

“They’re just going to be here to entertain the fans,” he said, “and that’s all we want to do.”

Doors will open at the rock gym at Newland Elementary at 6 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show, which will last about two hours. Concession stands will be open, offering fans popcorn, drinks and other favorites.

At just $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 12, it’s an affordable and easy way for the whole family to have fun together.

What else does a ticket get you? Many participating pro-wrestlers will be available throughout the night for autographs and meet-and-greets.

Bare said he’s a big wrestling fan and he’s looking forward to the event.

“It’s just entertainment. That’s really how I’ve always explained it,” he said. “Wrestling, to me, is like a men’s soap opera. If you follow it and the story like like I do, you just watch it for the entertainment value.”

If this first NAWA event goes well in Newland, Bare said it could become an event that takes places as often as twice a month.
