This past weekend, Macy Pate, a 10-year-old golfer from Boone, competed against girls from across the Carolinas in the sub-regional qualifier of the annual Drive, Chip & Putt event, which was founded in 2013 by the Masters Tournament, USGA and The PGA of America in order to grow the game among youth.

053Macy now moves on to compete in the regional qualifier in Pinehurst on Sept. 4 to earn a chance to play in the National Finals held during the week of the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club, which, of course, is a huge deal.

Macy is the daughter of Chris and Martha Pate and is a student of Hardin Park Elementary School.

Blowing Rock News visited with the Pate family at the Boone Golf Course recently and published a feature on Macy, describing her as a “lean wisp of a young girl with matchless confidence strikes the ball straight and true down the driving range somewhere around 200 yards, time after time after time.”

Macy’s father worked as the golf course superintendent at Boone Golf Course for about 10 years in the ‘90s, and Macy recalled “messing around” with her pops at the nine-hole Willow Creek Golf Course off of N.C. 105. It wasn’t long before she and golf were simpatico.

“She’s taken to golf like a duck takes to water,” her father told Blowing Rock News on Monday. “It has been so much fun for us to watch her grow and develop her game.”

Check out the lengthy feature to learn more about this young talent.
