May 16, 2013. Maura Shawn Scanlin of Vilas, NC will perform an end of the year violin recital on Friday, May 24th in the Recital Hall of the Broyhill Music Center, 813 Rivers Street on the campus of Appalachian State University (ASU). Maura Shawn will perform works by Tchaikovsky, Kreisler and Brahms. She will be accompanied by pianist Nancy Johnston from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) in Winston Salem. The recital is free and open to the public with a reception following.
Maura Shawn has been playing violin since she was three years old. Her teachers have included Nan Stricklen of Banner Elk, Dr. Nancy Bargerstock of the Hayes School of Music at ASU and Sarah Johnson at UNCSA. Recent honors Maura Shawn has received include winning the 2013 NC Chapter of the American String Teachers Association Competition and the 2013 Asheville Youth Concerto Competition.
This year she was also a finalist in the Hilton Head Youth Concerto Competition and was runner up in the Charlotte Young Artists Competition. Her UNCSA chamber music quartet the “Jia Quartet” also recently placed in the semi-final round of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition held on the campus of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indianna. In addition to her classical music studies Maura Shawn is also a fiddler and plays with the local Celtic group the “Forget-Me-Nots” and is a three time US National Scottish Fiddling Champion.
Maura Shawn has recently graduated from high school at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts where she has studied for the last three years. She will attend the Yellow Barn Young Artists Program in Putney, Vermont this summer and will begin her college education this fall at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
