Legendary ‘Horn in the West’ Performance Returns Friday for 61st Season; Special Deal for Opening Night

By Greg Hince

June 14, 2012. Horn in the West, a High Country institution, starts its 61st season Friday. Shows run each night until August 11, except for Mondays, beginning at 8 p.m.

The “Horn in the West” drama is performed on the grounds, outside in the mountains of Boone, and according to their website, is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful theatres in the country. The drama brings to life the famous frontiersman and town namesake Daniel Boone, and the mountain settlers who struggled to for freedom during the years of the War for Independence. The website refers to it as “the nation’s oldest Revolutionary War drama.”

The show first premiered in 1952 and the theatre has had Over 1.4 million attendees. The drama also highlights the settlers who came to the Blue Ridge Mountains seeking escape from British tyranny.

The original script was written by Kermit Hunter, who passed away in 2001. He had been working on a script titled “Wilderness Road” and when asked to write a script for the Boone area, adapted that into “Horn in the West.”

This year’s performance series is headlined by the opening performance this Friday, June 15, when entrance will be $2, the same as when it opened in 1952.

“We wanted to extend a big thank you to all the people who have come out, and supported us through all the years,” Katy Cook, Office Intern said.

Tickets for the first night are $16 less than usual prices.

“It’s a really great deal, and we expect the first night to be a big celebration,” Cook said.
