Aug 9, 2013 This Sunday, Aug. 11, the Grandfather Mountain Concert in the Park series will present the Grandfather Mountain Highlanders Pipe Band. The event is free and takes place at the Memorial Park on Main Street in Blowing Rock. The concert will start at 4 p.m. and last approximately an hour. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets, and dogs are expressly forbidden in the park, but there are benches just outside the park with a view of the concert.
For 28 years, the Grandfather Mountain Highlanders have performed yearly in the concert series. The band is a grade IV competition band, twice competing and placing in the World Pipe Band Championship in Glasgow, Scotland. Within the group’s first two years, they were awarded the title of Southern Champions when they won at the Stone Mountain Highland Games. Since then, the group has won award after award for their traditional Scottish music.
This year, the concert series has put on five events which is slightly above the average. The next event will be on Sept 8 when the ASU Gospel Choir, a group of over 60 members, will sing in the park. Each event takes place the day after the Art in the Park. The Concert Series is funded by Paul and Brenda Fairbetter. For more information, call the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce at 828-295-7851 or navigate to the website.
