ASU Deans’ Release Program Ranking Report As Part Of Program Prioritization Process

Appalachian State University Provost Lori Gonzalez office on Monday Nov. 11 released the composite rankings of ASU deans sorting programs deemed as “most core” and “least core” for the university.

The program prioritization process started in December of 2011 after Gonzalez’s arrival to ASU in September of that year.  

The deans released six different reports on Monday: ranking each the highest and lowest bachelor and master programs as well as a list of possible consolidations of bachelors and masters programs.

Here is a list of the top ten considerations from each field along with the possible consolidations of bachelors and masters programs.  Of the seven deans programs in the top quartile had to receive four of the seven votes:

Top ten Bachelors programs: english, elementary education, exercise science, psychology, nursing, history, sustainable development, music education, biology (cell/molecular biology) and risk management and insurance. 

Masters programs speech‐language pathology, reading education general, public administration, business administration, technology, exercise science, professional school counseling, biology, accounting

Bottom ten Bachelors programs: appalachian studies, womens studies, health education secondary education, family and consumer sciences secondary education, technology education, global studies, business education, biology/ecology evolution and environmental biology, art management and apparel design and merchandising. 

Masters programs: history education, gerontology, computer science, music education, EdS (education specialist), special education: teaching parent specialty, child development: birth-kindergarten, mathematics education, romance languages and criminal justice and criminology.

Bachelors top three of list of possible consolidations: appalachian studies, womens studies, global studies – appalachian studies, womens studies, global studies, inter disciplinary studies – art education (k-12), studio art, art management  

Masters top three of list of possible consolidations: mathematics education, mathematics – special education, special education: teaching parent specialty – middle grades education, child development: birth-kindergarten

Friday Nov. 22 a draft report will be shared with the Deans’ Council, and review reports are due from the academic support units.
