Unofficial Results for May 6 Primary

May 6, 2014. The polls for the May 6 primary close at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and the results should all be in by 8:30 p.m. The results will be posted in a list format below as soon as the State Board of Elections and local elections boards in Watauga and Avery counties tally the votes.

Those winning partisan races in the primary by more than 40 percent of the vote will move onto the ballots of the general election in November. However, some races may be effectively called on Tuesday night because no challenger from an opposing party exists – such as the District Attorney for the 24th Prosecutorial District, which has three GOP candidates and none from other parties.

If the winner of a partisan primary race receives less than 40 percent of the vote, the second-highest votegetter can request a runoff that would take place several weeks from now, according to Avery County Board of Elections Director Sheila Ollis. Those races with a potential runoff will be noted below.

While some of the contests only span one county, others such as the U.S. Senate races span, of course, multiple counties. Unless noted results listed below tally all the voting districts for a particular race whether its all the precincts of a certain county or all the districts of a U.S. House of Representative seat or the entire state for a U.S. Senate seat.

Watauga County Board of Elections Director Jane Ann Hodges said the results won’t become official until after the upcoming canvass.
