Young Invincibles Join High Country Youth Summit Panel on Young Adult Unemployment at BRAHM Thursday

Event Comes On the Heels of Report Showing North Carolina’s Youth Unemployment Rate Is Nearly Double the Overall State Rate

imagesAug. 8, 2013. On Thursday, Aug. 8, Young Invincibles, in conjunction with the High Country Workforce Development Board, will be hosting a discussion on young adult unemployment at the High Country Youth Summit. The talk will focus on the drivers of North Carolina’s high rate of young adult unemployment (ages 18 to 34) and the job training programs essential to helping young people return to the workforce and achieve economic security.

Panelists will include: Young Invincibles’ Dustin Summers, state and local education administrators, workforce development professionals and area employers collectively seeking solutions to empower and employ young adults in the High Country.

This discussion is part of Young Invincibles’ national “Get the Facts about Youth Jobs” campaign, which serves to both educate local organizations regarding the job market for young adults and afford community stakeholders the opportunity to discuss solutions to train young adults for careers. This latest event comes on the heels of a new fact sheet by Young Invincibles on youth unemployment in North Carolina, which found:

  • North Carolina has a higher young adult unemployment rate  (18.8%) than the national average for young adults (15.6%).[JM1]
  • Since 2005, North Carolina has experienced a significant drop in full versus part-time employment. In 2005, (61%) of North Carolina’s young workers were full-time employees, today, only (51%) of these workers have achieved full-time employment.
  • Wages have remained stagnant while a much smaller share of young people (ages 18 to 24) have a job today (58%) compared to 2005 (53%). Studies show that lack of early work experience dims career prospects.
