Watauga Democrats to Organize Another ‘Cash Mob’ to Benefit Local Businesses on Saturday, Aug. 25

Aug. 20, 2012. The Watauga County Democratic Party is organizing another “cash mob” that will visit two Boone businesses on Saturday, Aug. 25.

A “cash mob” is a way to encourage people to support small, local businesses by spending money as a group to give the business owners a little bit of economic stimulus.

The Democrats have chosen the Appalachian Antique Mall in downtown Boone and the Mountain House Restaurant in New Market Centre to “mob.” This is the second of a series of “buy local” events organized by the Democrats. The first one was in Blowing Rock in July and infused some $2,000 into the local economy.

The “cash mob” will be at the antique mall at 11 a.m., followed by lunch at the Mountain House. Everyone is invited to participate, regardless of political persuasion.

“Cash mobs” are a part of a national trend to “buy local.” The first such organized cash mob occurred in August of 2011 in Buffalo, N.Y., and has since spread to many other states.

“People had such a good time at our first cash mob,” said WataugaDems Volunteer Coordinator Marsha Walpole “We intend to keep this ‘buy local’ movement going as long as we can. It’s clearly good for the entire community.”

“We chose the antique mall because there are dozens of small businesspeople represented in there,” said Walpole. “And of course the Mountain House has been struggling since it was displaced by Cracker Barrel.”
