Sept. 26, 2012. The Watauga County Democratic Party started out its third “cash mob” in Zionville Saturday morning, visiting David G. Miller Farm Supply, where “mobbers” bought everything from rain boots and gardening hoes to fresh eggs. The group then crowded into Hill Top Drive-In for old-fashioned milkshakes and burgers.

Organizers estimate that the mobbers collectively spent over $1,500 to help boost the economies of the two local Watauga businesses.

Cash mobs are part of the “buy local” movement. “Cash Mobs” are mostly organized through social media, where a group gathers at a particular local business to spend money in masse. Cash mobs help out the business’s bottom line for the day and bring visibility to local businesses.

Democratic Party Chairwoman, Diane Tilson, said the “cash mobs” have become one of the Party’s most popular activities. “Everyone loves participating in the cash mobs. Participants come away with a sense of pride for supporting Watauga’s local businesses and bringing our community together in such a positive way. Times are hard for everyone, but together, we are stronger.”

The Party has planned its next “cash mob” for Saturday, October 13th. For more information on the Democratic Party’s cash mobs, or to nominate a local business to “mob,” visit www.wataugadems.com
