July 2, 2013. U.S. Senator Kay Hagan Wednesday will host a roundtable on college affordability at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Center City Campus. Joining Hagan at the roundtable will be UNC Charlotte Chancellor, Phillip Dubois; Johnson C. Smith University President, Ronald Carter; Queens University of Charlotte President, Pamela Davies; Central Piedmont Community College President, Tony Zeiss; and a local student.
Last week, Hagan introduced the Keep Student Loans Affordable Act of 2013 which would keep the interest rate on subsidized federal Stafford loans low for an additional year as Congress works on a long-term, sustainable solution for the federal student loan program. Without Congressional action, the interest rate on federal Stafford loans doubled from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent for 176,000 North Carolina students on July 1. The Keep Student Loans Affordable Act of 2013 would set the interest rate for any subsidized Stafford loan made between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014 at the current rate of 3.4 percent.
