Jan. 23, 2013. The Watauga County Young Democrats are hosting their fifth annual January reception for state-wide Democratic activists, elected officials, prospective candidates, and Democratic Party officers.

The fifth annual “Meet ’n’ Greet” will be Friday, Jan. 25, beginning at 7 p.m. at Char Restaurant on Howard Street in Boone. Admission will be $20 at the door and $5 for Young Democrats. A cash bar will be available, as well as food from the Char menu.

Guest speakers include candidates for the N.C. Democratic Party chair Eric Mansfield and Randy Voller and vice chair candidates are to be announced.

“This is a great opportunity for many of our young Democratic Party activists here to meet some rising stars from across the state as well as mingle with some of our great veterans in state government,” said Jocelyn Hunt, president of the Young Democrats.

The club expects candidates for offices with the state Democratic Party to attend. The election of a new state-wide chair and other officers will take place on Feb. 2 at the Durham Convention Center at the winter meeting of the state Executive Committee. Watauga County has four votes on that committee.

County, district, and state-wide elected Democrats are also expected, including members of the North Carolina Council of State.

“This event is not just for young people,” said Hunt. “We want all our good Democrats to come out and mingle.”

The Young Democrats will be honoring some of their mentors in the local Democratic Party as well as providing a chance for prospective candidates to network and test the waters.

Donors of $100 or more are invited to a pre-reception at a private residence where the Young Democrats will bestow their annual “Golden Donkey” award on the local Democrat who has most helped or inspired young people or who has offered an example of outstanding leadership in political activity.

Char Restaurant is located at 179 Howard Street in downtown Boone. For more information, write Jocelyn@wataugadems.com
