July 18, 2012. On Tuesday, July 17, Watauga County and state voters turned out — albeit only a very small portion of them — for the second primary election. In Watauga, only 1.53 percent of registered voters (600 out of 39,330) cast ballots, compared to 3.58 percent (220,635 out of 6,158,561) statewide.
On the Democratic ballot, there was only one decision to make: Marlowe Foster or John C. Brooks to run for N.C. Commissioner of Labor. Brooks won narrowly, getting 53.63 percent of the vote.
On the Republican side, eight candidates were running for four nominations. Dan Forest defeated Tony Gurley and will run for N.C. Lieutenant Governor after winning in a landslide with 88.41 percent of the vote over. Mike Causey edged out Richard Morgan to run for N.C. Commissioner of Insurance with 67.18 percent of the vote. In the closest race, Ed Goodwin just barely defeated Kenn Gardner by two votes to run for N.C. Secretary of State. John Tedesco defeated Richard Alexander with 54.13 percent of the vote to run for N.C. Superintendent of Public Instruction.
