Deborah K. Ross, former Wake County representative to the N.C. House, will be the special featured speaker at the 2015 Fall Rally of the Watauga County Democratic Party on Saturday, Sept. 19. Rep. Ross has been prominently mentioned statewide as a potential Democratic candidate to challenge Sen. Richard Burr in the 2016 elections.

The rally will be hosted by the Appalachian State University College Democrats and will kick off at 5 p.m. with a barbecue dinner in the Roess Dining Hall (the main dining facility) on the Appalachian State University campus. Free parking will be available that evening in the Rivers St. parking deck, with easy access to Roess via the elevated walkway over Rivers St.

In writing about Ross’s potential for a Senate campaign, News & Observer columnist Rob Christensen called her “whip smart” and noted that she had been “among the most articulate members of the House.” While a member of the General Assembly, she was a champion of voting rights and a sponsor of same-day registration.

Ross was ranked as the ninth most effective member of the N.C. House in the 2009-2010 session by the N.C. Center for Public Policy Research, and she was named Legislator of the Year four times, in 2006, 2009, 2010, and in 2012, among many other awards and honors. She resigned her House seat in 2013 to take a job as general counsel for the Triangle Transit regional bus service.

A graduate of the UNC College of Law, Ross has lectured at the Duke University School of Law, served as an ethics consultant at the Duke University Kenan Institute for Ethics, and managed the ACLU of North Carolina for over seven years.

The Democratic Fall Rally will also feature new inductees into the Watauga Democratic Party’s Hall of Fame and an auction of “Precinct Gift Baskets.” Tickets to the rally are $10 and may be purchased at the door.
