Photos: A White Election Day in Watauga County

By Jesse Wood

Nov. 6, 2012. Traveling through Watauga County this morning on Election Day, the rural polls seemed the most active. At about 8 a.m. this morning, the Laurel Creek precinct had more than 20 folks waiting in line to vote at the Cove Creek Fire Department.

And talking to officials in the Cove Creek precinct at the Western Watauga Community Center and the Boone 3 precinct at the Agricultural Center, the Cove Creek precinct had nearly double the voters than the Boone 3 precinct early this morning.

Mary Horn, the chief judge at the Agricultural Center, speculated that “most of the folks in this precinct had already voted” and one of her colleagues mentioned that the student’s hadn’t woken up yet.

While for the past week candidates had been campaigning regularly outside the Watauga County Courthouse, none could be seen on King Street in front the Watauga County Administration Building, which was Boone 1 precinct. However, this morning Perry Yates and Billy Kennedy, candidates for Watauga County Commissioners, arrived in Sugar Grove about the time the polls opened up at 6:30 a.m. for some last-minute campaigning.
