North Carolina’s Association of CPAs Applauds the Recent Passage of the Tax Reform Package

July 17, 2013. The North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants (NCACPA), commented on today’s passage of the tax reform bill, expected to be signed into law by Gov. Pat McCrory.

“We applaud Governor McCrory and members of the General Assembly for taking an important step towards real tax reform in North Carolina. We look forward to continuing our work with state leadership on this important issue. As we have said all along, modernizing our state tax code is essential to providing revenue stability for important services, bolstering job growth, and better protecting our state from unplanned tax hikes and budget cuts during economic downturns,” said Rollin Groseclose, CPA, NCACPA member and partner in the public accounting firm, Johnson Price Sprinkle, PA in Asheville, NC.

Earlier this year, NCACPA launched “Tar Heel Tax Reform,” an initiative designed to alert families and businesses about the critical need for our state to modernize its tax code.  As part of the initiative, NCACPA launched a website,www.tarheeltaxreform.com, to help explain this complex issue as it was debated in the General Assembly and encourage citizens to get involved.

NCACPA did not promote specific legislation, but advocated for three key principles to guide the state’s tax reform efforts:  reliability, transparency, and fairness.  Their work will continue as lawmakers address tax code reform in the future.

“Our team of state tax code specialists reviewed the legislation and will continue to provide counsel to lawmakers on its impact. Going forward, our Tax Modernization Task Force will provide input regarding future reform considerations as the General Assembly studies the issue further,” said Jim Ahler, NCACPA CEO.  “This is an important issue to the future of our state and we look forward to remaining engaged in these discussions.”
