New, Familiar Faces To Be Sworn Into Boone Town Council, Select Final Member Thursday

By Jesse Wood

The Boone Town Council will have three new faces in the term ahead.

Elected members on the Boone Town Council will be sworn in on Thursday and then they will help fill the fifth and final seat, which is vacant due to former Councilman Rennie Brantz being elected as mayor during the middle of his term.

Along with Brantz, town voters elected Loretta Clawson, a former mayor and councilwoman, incumbent Lynne Mason and complete newcomers Charlotte Mizelle and Jennifer Teague to office in November.

Contributing to the makeup change on the board was the fact that former Councilwoman Jennifer Pena resigned last summer to move closer to family in the Piedmont. Clawson took over her position.

The new council members will select from four applications that the town received for the position before the deadline about week and a half ago. Jim Buchanan, Jeannine Underdown Collins, Eric Plaag and David Welsh all applied.

Exiting the board are Quint David and Fred Hay. Both will receive a Service Appreciation Resolution that states their “exemplary dedication to the best interest of the community as [they have] worked constantly for the betterment of its economic, cultural and aesthetic development.”

It also noted the particular committees, boards and taskforces Hay and David served on during their time on the Boone Town Council.

David served on the Affordable Housing Task Force, AppalCART, Cultural Resources Advisory Board, Watauga County Economic Development Commission, Transportation Committee and Water Use Committee.

Hay served on the Parks and Garden Committee, Watauga County Parks and Recreation Commission, Vehicle Committee, Water Use Committee, and the resolution noted he had a particular interest in greenways.

The Boone Town Council meets on Thursday, Dec. 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers on Blowing Rock Road.
