Moral Monday Service of Redemption To Be Observed Locally on Dec. 23 at 3:45 p.m.

Dec. 17, 2013. On Dec. 23 at 3:45 p.m., people will gather from all over North Carolina at the State Capitol in Raleigh to hold a Moral Monday Service of Redemption.

The event will either be a celebration of Governor McCrory’s wise decision to hold a Special Redemption Session of the General Assembly to rescind hurtful laws passed in the last session or it will be the continued protest and moral witness to the hardships put upon so many of our citizens. The laws in question are those that specifically deny Medicaid to 500,000 poor North Carolinians and emergency unemployment benefits to 170,000 struggling families.

In order to show the Governor and the NC General Assembly that we are not willing to quietly allow our neighbors to be crushed by policies that unjustly diminish the lives of disadvantaged people, especially the children, our seniors, and the working poor, Forward Together – Watauga County has been mobilizing as many of our members as possible to go to Raleigh.

We can’t all get to Raleigh so, Forward Together – Watauga County is providing a local opportunity to participate in this Service of Redemption. We will provide a viewing/cookie gathering at the Watauga County Library conference room, Monday, 23 December, beginning at 3:45pm. A livestream, beginning at 4pm, of the event in Raleigh will be shown. Please bring a plate of cookies to share as a symbol to counteract that of Governor McCrory’s now-historic “Sharing of Cookies”. For background see  http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/she-the-people/wp/2013/08/01/north-carolina-gov-pat-mccrory-gives-protesters-cookies-seriously/.  Our cookies are a symbol of hope and justice for all of the people of North Carolina.

This is an excellent opportunity to be part of an important gathering in Raleigh and to connect with other justice-minded individuals in our area. We will also be making available an update on formation of a Watauga branch of the NAACP NC. For more information, please contact Marg McKinney (mjmck.wrnest@gmail.com), coordinator for Forward Together – Watauga County.
