Sept. 10, 2013. Activists stood along West King Street in front of the Turchin Center for the Arts on Monday evening protesting potential U.S. airstrikes against Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian regime, which the State Department accuses of a chemical weapons attack that killed more than 1,000 people in August.

The vigil was organized through a MoveOn.org civic-action event by Kathryn D. ( who didn’t give her last name), and more than  two dozen folks stood in downtown Boone holding signs and candles, chanting “No More War” and cheering when drivers “honked for peace.”

“We are dead set against war and any more military engagement, involvement in the Middle East,” Kathryn said. “We need to practice the art of peace and diplomacy for a change and that’s why we are here tonight, to say no more airstrikes in Syria.”

Among the protesters were Vietnam veterans. One of those vets said, “We are against war. We need peace,” adding that the U.S. can’t win in Syria and nor can it achieve a successful “little war.”

“Don’t bomb Syria,” he added.

The local protest was part of a larger movement of MoveOn members and allies who took the streets in more than 160 events opposing the authorization of military strikes on Syria by Congress.
