High Country Forward To Hold ‘Tea and Cookies’ Event Saturday in Boone, Foxx Declines Invitation To Talk About Upcoming Bills

A group of High Country citizens have invited U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx of the 5th Congressional District to a discussion over “Tea and Cookies” immediately following her appearance at the Watauga County Republican Convention at the Watauga County Courthouse on Saturday, March 4.

Organized by a newly formed, grassroots civic engagement group, High Country Forward, the event will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. at F.A.R.M. Cafe, located at 617 West King Street in downtown Boone.

Organizers say they are inviting Foxx to a nonpartisan, informal reception to learn more about the House Committee on Education and Workforce, the powers of her chairmanship, and what bills are expected to emerge from the committee: “Our goal is to be better informed citizens. We hope that Representative Foxx will attend, but if she does not, we will discuss the topics without her.”

Boone Mayor Rennie Brantz has agreed to serve as the moderator for the nonpartisan discussion.

Asked if Foxx would be attending the “Tea for Cookies” event, Sheridan Watson, spokeswoman for Foxx, replied, “Unfortunately, she has a scheduling conflict and will not be able to attend.”

Kathy Parham, a media contact for High Country Forward, said that organizers are disappointed because they intentionally scheduled the event immediately following the GOP convention and a couple blocks away from the courthouse.

“We are really disappointed,” Parham said. “We did go back and reach out again to see if a staff member could come and represent the representative’s position on the bills most concerning coming up in the committee, including House Resolution 610, but they also declined to do that.”
