Nov. 5, 2012. On Saturday, the Watauga County Democratic Party held its fourth cash mob at Joe’s Italian Restaurant and Bare Essentials, pumping over $3,000 into the two local businesses in just a few hours.

“We are so pleased with Saturday’s turnout and energy. So are the two businesses we mobbed. Our cash mob effort is gaining steam, drawing more participants and consequently throwing more money into local cash registers,” said Marsha Walpole, the Party’s cash mob organizer.

The idea behind the cash mob is to encourage people to go into small, local businesses on a set date and time and spend their money, en masse, to give the business a little bit of economic stimulus. The goal is to financially support and showcase Watauga’s local businesses as well as bring the community together in a “buy local” movement.

Walpole says everyone is invited to participate and that the cash mob effort has already contributed right at $10,000 total into the businesses it has mobbed.

The Party plans a series of cash mobs for the upcoming holidays in an effort to encourage spending with local businesses this holiday season. It is also exploring a “Black Friday” cash mob. “Black Friday” is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.
