Three Democrats and two Republicans filed their candidacy for the 5th Congressional District of North Carolina in the U.S. House. Filing closed at the end of last week.
Jim Roberts of Pilot Mountain, Josh Brannon of Boone and Charlie Wallin of Boone all filed for the Democratic primary, while incumbent Virginia Foxx of Banner Elk and Pattie Curran of Kernersville filed for the Republican primary.
North Carolina’s 5th Congressional District includes Alleghany, Alexander, Ashe, Avery, Forsyth, Surry, Stokes, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties. This district was amended prior to the 2016 primary by the N.C. General Assembly after the courts ruled that the 2011 redistricting was unconstitutional.
Due to the timing of the ruling, the congressional primaries were pushed back to June 7.
GOP
Virginia Foxx of Banner Elk is seeking her seventh term as the representative for the 5th Congressional District.
In announcing her 2016 candidacy Foxx said, “Our nation is at a historic crossroads. President Obama and his liberal allies have tried to take us down a road of government coercion, higher taxes and soul-crushing regulation. North Carolina voters from all walks of life tell me virtually every day that we cannot go any farther down that road.
“They are right—which is why I’m running for Congress.”

Pattie Curran of Kernersville is challenging Foxx in the Republican primary.
The following is posted on Curran’s campaign website:
“Pattie is an activist at heart. She has worked tirelessly to defund and repeal Obamacare, to end the Export-Import Bank, to stop Common Core and to stop the assault on religious liberty. Her work has been published online and in the Washington Times and she has been interviewed on FOX News and News Max numerous times over her fight to repeal Obamacare.”

Democrats
Jim Roberts of Pilot Mountain filed for the 5th congressional district. His “about” posting on his campaign Facebook page states: “The trade treaties created a thousand billionaires in the United States and at the same time impoverished tens of millions of American workers.”

Josh Brannon is running for the 5th Congressional District again. While Foxx beat Brannon in the 2014 general election with 61 percent of the vote, he was only eight votes shy of taking Watauga from her.
In 2016, he’s again using the tag line “out-Foxx.”
“We can work together to out-Foxx them. And we can do it by convincing everyone we know just how much is at stake, and getting them to vote for those who believe in opportunity for everyone, not just the 1 percent,” his campaign website states.

Charlie Wallin released this statement on his campaign’s Facebook page:
“I promised I would run again and on Wednesday I filed to run for the US Congress in the 5th District. I’m tired of the same Virginia Foxx and her lack of representation in the House. All we ever get out of her is excuses of why she can’t do things. I will make sure that I don’t have to look for scapegoats or excuses. People of this District are made up of 40 hour a week hard workers who get little pay. As just another person who is made of that mold I want to represent you and this District.”
