Democratic Women’s Club To Hear Boone, Blowing Rock Candidates at Wednesday, Sept. 11, Luncheon

Sept. 6, 2013. The Democratic Women’s Club of Watauga County will host two municipal candidates as guest speakers at its monthly luncheon on Wednesday, September 11. The club will convene for lunch at Golden Corral at 11:30 a.m., with the speakers scheduled for noon.

Sue Sweeting is a candidate for the Blowing Rock city council. She is a decades-long resident of Blowing Rock, a nurse practitioner, a member of the Blowing Rock Planning Board, a past member of the Watauga County Commission (1998-2002), Coordinator for Appalachian Advanced Healthcare Providers, and Chair of the North Carolina Nurses Association Council of Nurse Practitioners.

While serving on the County Commission, Sweeting was very involved in developing Watauga County’s “high-impact” polluting industries ordinance, and she served as chairwoman of the Watauga County Democratic Party from 2003-2005.

Andy Ball is running to be Boone’s next mayor. While attending Appalachian State University, Ball became the youngest elected official in Watauga County and was reelected to the Boone Town Council in 2011. He has been recognized as a youth activist and leader at the state level and nationally. He has been active with the North Carolina League of Municipalities, was awarded Young Elected Official of the Year by the YDNC in 2013, and serves as Deputy State Director for both the Young Elected Officials Network and Democratic Municipal Officials.

Ball has served on the Watauga Economic Development Commission, the High Country Rural Transportation Advisory Committee, the Watauga Substance Abuse Prevention Collaborative, the Boone Board of Adjustment, the Sustainability Task Force, and the Water Use Committee. He also serves on the Board of Directors of AppalCart Transit Authority and PHARMN, a non-profit focused on agritourism and local foods.

Municipal elections in both Boone and Blowing Rock will be Tuesday, November 5, with Early Voting beginning on October 17.
