Conservatives ‘Pitch ALMOST Perfect Game’ on Tuesday

By Jesse Wood

Nov. 4, 2014. While the local Democrats were crying in their beers at Galileo’s on Tuesday night like Hank Williams, the Republicans were riding high at the Courtyard by Marriott.

This headline from A Watauga Conservative, the local conservative blog, says it all: “Watauga Repubs Pitch ALMOST Perfect Game!”

“With victories in Watauga county for Tillis, Foxx, Soucek, Jordan, Blust, Hodges, – and school board winners Jason Cornett and Ron Henries, Republicans in Watauga are celebrating…they have done their part!” the post reads. “… Watauga remains in conservative hands!”

With a few precincts left to report late Tuesday night, U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx had received 61 percent of the vote with 130,640 votes compared to her challenger Josh Brannon, who had 83,378 votes. Foxx outspent her candidate once again by a wide margin.

Foxx, 71, will enter her sixth term.

With nearly all of the precincts reporting as of late Tuesday night, Republican Thom Tillis beat U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan with 48.85 percent of the vote. Hagan received 47.23 percent of the vote. Libertarian candidate Sean Haugh received 3.75 percent of the vote – more than 107,000 voters, which was double the difference between Hagan and Tillis.

On his Facebook page, Tillis wrote: “This is not my victory – this is your victory. You’ve all been an extension of my family and worked so hard. Thank you, North Carolina.”
